Connected cars, the “technological riot” against the Commission makes some progress

According to the ICT industry, the rules proposed by Commissioner Bulc "were out of date before they were drafted" since they involve the use of technologies prior to 5G. Something is moving in the European Parliament, and also in the European Commission there are oppositions

Bruxelles – The protests of the telecommunications operators against the “Connected car” legislation proposed by the European Commission finds consent in the Parliament and even in the European Commission.

The EC Transport commissioner Violeta Bulc has developed a proposal that stresses the GSMA association was born out of date, involving the use of technologies (the WI-FI 802.11 p) that are to be overcome and replaced by the 5G, on which the World industry is heavily investing.

The vote of the European Parliament, in the Transport Commission, is scheduled for April the 8th and, according to sources heard by Eunews, some MEPs are ready to block this aspect of the Bulc’s proposal.

Eunews, also knows that the vice president of the European Commission Andrus Ansip has written a letter to commissioner Bulc noting how stakeholders in the sector are firmly opposed to her position, and that he “regrets” about the modest opening she made that only requires “to be ready” for new technologies. But, as Ansip said himself, the majority of the members of the European Commission do not raise any concern, so he stops there.

In the meanwhile, today the general director of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA), Mats Granryd, has written a letter to the Minister of the Transport Council (also co-legislators) reiterating the firm opposition of GSMA to the choice made by the European Commission and therefore inviting “the European Parliament and the EU Member States to reject the Delegated Act and, instead, maintain the flexibility to encourage the implementation of more advanced technologies. If the Commission stand on its position – says Granryd – it will never make European roads safer”.
