Greens support Ulrike Lunaceck in her run for the presidency of the European Parliament. The ecologist group has unanimously voted for electing the Austrian politician, already a MEP and co-President of the Intergroup of the European Parliament for LGBT rights, as their candidate.
“My decision of running for the post of President of the European Parliament was pushed by behind-the-scenes agreements among national governments about key positions of European Institutions,” explained Lunaceck. Actually, a confirmation for Schulz as head of the Strasbourg institution is almost done, but “MEPs should not tolerate any interference in the democratic process of the European Parliament. We owe this to our electors,” insisted the Greens candidate.
“My candidacy,” added Lunaceck, “is also an opposition to the ‘great coalition’ that will suffocate the debate and, in particular, will restrict even more the possibilities for minor parties to have their positions taken into account in the decisional process.”
