Brussels – The European Commission has approved the addition of “Cavolfiore della Piana del Sele” (cauliflower from the Sele Plain) to the register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). The vegetable produced in the province of Salerno thus joins the EU’s 3612 protected designations.

The farmland of the Sele Plain consists of a thick layer of volcanic and alluvial soil, formed over the millennia due to the eruptions of Vesuvius and the alluvial activity of the Sele River and other small streams branching off into the Campania plain. A very fertile soil, combined with climatic and morphological characteristics, gives the product its “unique characteristics of texture, adaptation to different cooking conditions, and flavor,” the European Commission said in a statement.

With the registration of the Cavolfiore della Piana del Sele, the number of Italian PDOs, PGIs, and TSGs recognized at the European level rises to 327. The first country in the EU for the wealth of protected designations, followed by France, which has 282, and Spain with 229.
