Extraordinary meeting of the Conference of Presidents in presence of Mario DRAGHI, special adviser to the President of the Commission on the Future of European Competitiveness

Brussels – The European Parliament will examine the Draghi report on the future of European competitiveness. On Tuesday, September 17, at the three-day plenary session in Strasbourg, the former ECB president will present his proposals to MEPs. The proposals were revealed earlier this week and have landed on the desks of politicians and industrialists across Europe.

Draghi will take questions from political groups, which have generally welcomed and revived the Italian economist’s report. Heavy criticism came only from the European left. The former premier’s speech in the plenary is scheduled for around 1:30 p.m.

The confirmation came in the morning, on the sidelines of the Conference of Presidents – the body that brings together the president of the European Parliament and group leaders – responsible for defining the session’s agenda. It is a busy schedule: on Tuesday, media attention will be on Ursula von der Leyen rather than the Italian economist. The EU leader, freshly confirmed as head of the European Commission, is due to present to the presidents of the Parliament’s political groups the structure and portfolios of the new College of Commissioners.

On Wednesday at 9 a.m., it will be up to the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, to outline to the Strasbourg Chamber the priorities of the Hungarian rotating presidency of the EU Council. Also this is an eagerly awaited appointment, given the leap forward of the Hungarian premier since Budapest has been at the helm of the 27, especially regarding his stance toward Russia’s war in Ukraine.
