Brussels – Defending democracy also through NRRP funds. That’s what 5-Star MEP Giuseppe Antoci calls for in a question addressed to the European Commission in light of the Italian investigation into the hacker network of the investigations agency Equalize, which, according to the MEP, “is just the tip of the iceberg of an IT system that is flawed on all sides.”

In recent weeks, there had been warnings of a phenomenon in full swing, with two other investigations into illicit access to the databases of banks and intranets of Italian institutions. “The world of politics cannot react like Alice in Wonderland,” Antoci notes. “Rather, it should put in place more incisive actions such as securing the communications of our institutions.” The MEP recalls that on July 2, the Italian Parliament approved the cybersecurity law that set important principles against the vulnerability of our information systems, “but it’s business as usual: the government has not indicated where it intends to find the resources,” he said.

Therefore, in the past few days, “we submitted a question to the European Commission to shed light on these allocations. The budget lines are there, and they are in the NRRP funds dedicated to improving our country’s cyber defense capabilities. However, there is no news about these allocations.” So the 5 Star Movement has asked “the Commission to verify where these investments are and what projects have been proposed to achieve this goal. We need to invest more in security because, as Milan magistrates say, it is our democracy that is the first victim of these abuses.”
