Four to the Greens and two to the Left. Newly elected AVS split into their respective groups in the EU Parliament

The knot of constituency allocations for the six new MEPs has been resolved. Leoluca Orlando joins Benedetta Scuderi, Ignazio Marino, and Cristina Guarda in the Green group (which rises to 54 members), while Ilaria Salis and Domenico Lucano join the ranks of that of the Left (which elects its Chair today)

Brussels – Having unraveled the knot of the attribution of six MEPs elected from the ranks of the Green-Left Alliance in the June 6-9 European elections now comes confirmation on the division into the groups in the EU Parliament to which the two souls of the alliance report in Brussels. Leoluca Orlando, Benedetta Scuderi, Cristina Guarda, and Ignazio Marino will sit with the Greens/ALE group in the 10th legislature. Ilaria Salis and Domenico Lucano will go to the Left group, which today (June 25) will hold its constituent meeting with the election of the Presidency.

Confirming to Eunews the decision on the 4 Greens-2Left split (and not three and three) are sources within the Green Europe party, who also disclose the decision of former Palermo Mayor Orlando to strengthen the ranks of the Green/ALE group in the EU Parliament. In any case, the same sources emphasize that “the common electoral program” of the Green-Left Alliance will be the one to uphold, and, with this in mind, “there will be a joint coordination table” between the six MEPs elected in Brussels and Strasbourg. The Green/ALE group in the EU Parliament rises to 54 members (it was 52 after the elections), while that of the Left remains at 39 (still up from the initial 36).

A decision on the constituencies in which the three multi-candidates (Salis, Lucano, and Marino) were to be elected had been expected for the past two weeks, making five potential elected officials run for the remaining three seats: Young Greens’ co-spokesperson in Europe, Benedetta Scuderi (fourth in the Northwest), the Greens’ regional councilwoman in the Veneto Region Cristina Guarda (second in the Northeast), the head of Rights and Freedom of the Italian Left, Marilena Grassadonia (second in the Center), Green Europe MEP Francesco Emilio Borrelli (second in the South), and former Palermo mayor, Leoluca Orlando (third in the Islands).

As the leaders of the Green-Left Alliance, Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni, announced last night (June 24), in the end, Salis opted for the Northwest, Lucano for the South, and Marino for the Center, leaving room for Scuderi for the second seat in the Northwest, Guarda for the one in the Northeast, and Orlando for the one in the Islands. Here is the list of all elected MEPs by constituency and party.
