{"id":289432,"date":"2024-01-04T10:57:40","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T09:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/01\/04\/ue-rischi-climatici-gestione\/"},"modified":"2024-01-10T13:59:36","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T12:59:36","slug":"european-union-prepares-new-initiative-on-climate-risk-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/04\/european-union-prepares-new-initiative-on-climate-risk-management\/","title":{"rendered":"European Union prepares new initiative on climate risk management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; Europe\u00a0is warming &#8220;twice as fast as the global average,&#8221; which already reached 1.1\u00baC in 2020: this is the warning of the\u00a0<strong>European Commission <\/strong>as it\u00a0works to present in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/14019-Societal-resilience-managing-EU-climate-risks_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first quarter of the year\u00a0a new <strong>communication<\/strong><\/a> to identify areas for further action to manage the risks derived from climate change in the EU based on the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel of Experts, which states that <strong>climate change is causing &#8220;inevitable increases in physical impacts&#8221;<\/strong> in our society, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/03\/brussels-activates-civil-protection-mechanism-for-floods-in-france-and-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in the EU and around the world.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Current global commitments are estimated to be insufficient to meet the Paris Agreement goals of confining warming to within 1.5\u00baC, but instead indicate a trajectory of <strong>2.4-2.6\u00baC by the end of the century<\/strong>. The EU is already working on adaptation measures but\u00a0also notes that increased physical hazards from the effects of climate change are inevitable in the short term, regardless of the emissions scenario.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is that\u00a0to reduce the impact of growing climate risks on the EU and to prevent today&#8217;s policy decisions from increasing those risks for future generations, they must be managed &#8220;urgently and proactively.&#8221; The communication &#8211; which will not have legislative force &#8211; therefore will <strong>identify areas for further work to better manage the related risks in the EU<\/strong>, and to ensure that policymakers make informed decisions about the acceptable risk levels.<\/p>\n<p>It adds\u00a0that these climate risks may be compounded by other drivers, including social<strong> (socioeconomic status, gender, old age, health conditions, and ethnic background)<\/strong>, environmental, and economic factors.
