It has happened a few times in his nearly 14 years as prime minister of Hungary, but between the wave of popular protests that swept through national institutions in the last week and the external pressure caused by the continued procrastination over the ratification of Sweden&#8217;s NATO accession protocol, <strong>the strongman of Budapest is in danger of arriving at the European elections in June in big trouble<\/strong>. &#8220;The year 2024 could not have started in a worse way. Our President of the Republic has submitted her resignation to Parliament. It all stemmed from a pardon that former President\u00a0<strong>Katalin Nov\u00e1k granted with the backing<\/strong>\u00a0of the resigning Justice Minister\u00a0<strong>Judit Varga\u00a0<\/strong>to the deputy director of a state orphanage jailed for covering up a series of child sexual abuses at the facility. <strong><strong>The pardon dates back to last year, but the news only became public knowledge in recent weeks<\/strong>, <\/strong>sparking outrage that forced the resignation of both direct supervisors &#8212; and both close allies of Orb\u00e1n &#8211;even as street demonstrations did not subside.<strong> &#8220;<strong>We must submit&#8230;to the National Assembly in the form of a new child protection legislative package,&#8221; <\/strong><\/strong>according to the speech of the prime minister, who now risks politically not so much for his government to hold up &#8211; it can count on more than two-thirds of the deputies in Parliament, and elections are scheduled for 2026 &#8211; but rather for the prospects of a <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/02\/orban-puts-entry-into-post-european-ecr-in-crosshairs-but-group-in-eu-parliament-awaits-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strengthening Fidesz in the next legislature in Brussels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it is not only the popular protests in Hungary that are putting pressure on the Orb\u00e1n government. It has been\u00a0almost a month since the Hungarian prime minister<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/24\/orbans-hungarys-resistance-to-ratification-of-swedens-nato-accession-protocol-collapses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0confirmed<\/a> that &#8220;at the earliest possible opportunity,&#8221; a vote would come from the National Assembly in Budapest for the\u00a0<strong>ratification of Sweden&#8217;s NATO accession protocol<\/strong>. Hungary is the only member country of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization not to have formally approved Stockholm&#8217;s entry as the 32nd member of the Atlantic Alliance &#8211; after the end of the stalemate with the <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/23\/turkey-ready-to-ratify-swedens-nato-accession-protocol-but-hungary-is-still-missing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">favorable vote of the Turkish Grand National Assembly<\/a> &#8211; Orb\u00e1n formally dropped his <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/23\/turkey-ready-to-ratify-swedens-nato-accession-protocol-but-hungary-is-still-missing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short obstructionism<\/a>, but so did not his Fidesz party, which controls 116 seats (out of 199) in the National Assembly. Together with the Swedish prime minister, we have taken important steps in order to rebuild trust,&#8221; Orb\u00e1n said again in his address to the nation, promising again that &#8220;<strong>We are on course to ratify Sweden\u2019s accession to NATO at the beginning of Parliament\u2019s spring session.<\/strong>&#8221; The next session on the agenda is Monday (Feb. 26), but there is no indication yet that the vote can come so quickly. The impatience of the other 30 allies is growing, however, so much so that\u00a0<strong>in Washington, Orb\u00e1n has been called &#8220;the least reliable member of NATO,&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0according to the words of the chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee,\u00a0<strong>Ben Cardin, <\/strong>also\u00a0because of the Hungarian Premier&#8217;s close relationship with\u00a0<strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>. It does not seem to be a coincidence that in his speech on Saturday, Orb\u00e1n made it clear that he was hopeful<strong>\u00a0of a return of Donald Trump\u00a0to the White House to &#8220;make peace here in the eastern half of Europe,&#8221;<\/strong> while <em>The Donald&#8217;s<\/em> positions on Russia and Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/01\/17\/eu-and-the-specter-of-a-trump-2-0-balfour-carnegie-risk-of-ideological-and-tactical-divisions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are a source of great concern<\/a>\u00a0for most EU member states: &#8220;It is time for another \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d presidency in the United States,&#8221; \u00a0Trump&#8217;s closest ally among the 27 Member States said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-map\" data-src=\"visualisation\/16854222\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hungary&#8217;s premier faces demonstrations against the child sexual abuse scandal that led to the resignation of President Katalin Nov\u00e1k and Justice Minister Judit Varga.
