I know I am leaving NATO in good hands<\/strong>.&#8221; Rutte&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MinPres\/status\/1805887841576128984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first words<\/a> after the appointment underline the &#8220;tremendous honor&#8221; to lead the Atlantic Alliance, which &#8220;<strong>is and will remain the cornerstone of our collective security,<\/strong>&#8221; the almost former Dutch Prime Minister said. &#8220;Leading this organization is a responsibility I do not take lightly. I\u2019m grateful to all the Allies for placing their trust in me,&#8221; he added while thanking his predecessor Stoltenberg, &#8220;who has provided NATO with <strong>exceptional leadership over the past 10 years<\/strong> and for whom I have always had great admiration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The leaders of EU institutions in Brussels also congratulated the Dutch liberal who has been at the European Council table for the past 14 years (he took the office of Prime Minister of the Netherlands on Oct. 14, 2010). &#8220;<strong>Your leadership and experience will be crucial for the Alliance during these challenging times. <\/strong>I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the EU-NATO partnership,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/1805880833007321195\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0European Commission President <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, reinforced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EP_President\/status\/1805890699415413186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">words<\/a> of EU Parliament President <strong>Roberta Metsola<\/strong>: &#8220;At a time of increasing security challenges across the globe, your leadership and tenacity will be much needed.&#8221; The Secretary-General of the European Democratic Party, <strong>Sandro Gozi <\/strong>(from the Renew Europe family like the almost former Dutch Prime Minister), also expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sandrogozi\/status\/1805884377508790449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">satisfaction<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0the choice of Rutte, &#8220;who comes while the future of Europe, peace, and security is at stake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-map\" data-src=\"visualisation\/16854222\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h3 id='rutte-s-race-to-lead-nato'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">Rutte&#8217;s race to lead Nato<\/h3>\n<div>Early indications that Rutte was the favorite in the race for NATO secretary had emerged from an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rusi.org\/explore-our-research\/publications\/commentary\/nato-leadership-what-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">editorial<\/a> by former Atlantic Alliance spokesperson (until September 2023) <strong>Oana Lungescu<\/strong>: &#8220;Forging consensus among NATO\u2019s 31 allies is the Secretary General\u2019s main job. Rutte, sometimes called \u2018Teflon Mark\u2019 for his ability to lead diverse coalitions and survive political scandals, <strong>is a pragmatic dealmaker and a master of consensus<\/strong>.&#8221; In this sense, the Dutch Premier had long tightened relations with Stoltenberg\u00a0as well as other Alliance leaders, from Albania to Lithuania, from Poland to the United States. The issue of ties with Washington has been another point in favor of Rutte, who has developed an excellent\u00a0relationship with President <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong> and, at the same time, is also <strong>one of the few European leaders to have tried to maintain a stable one with his predecessor Trump<\/strong>, who may return to the White House after the November elections. The Alliance&#8217;s Secretary-General\u00a0selection is through informal diplomatic consultations among member countries, which propose candidates for the post (traditionally a senior European political figure).\u00a0There is no actual vote, but <strong>the decision is not confirmed until there is a consensus on a candidate<\/strong>. Rutte continued his diplomatic work in recent months to convince all 31 leaders until Hungary&#8217;s Prime Minister,\u00a0<strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PM_ViktorOrban\/status\/1803052780438880558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> on June 18 the agreement with outgoing Secretary-General Stoltenberg to unblock Rutte&#8217;s nomination (following a letter received from his Dutch colleague himself), and so did the President of Slovakia,\u00a0<strong>Peter Pellegrini<\/strong>.
