It is also the end of the 10-year term of <strong>Jens Stoltenberg<\/strong> at the head of the Atlantic Alliance before\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/26\/mark-rutte-has-been-named-stoltenbergs-successor-as-nato-secretary-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">handover<\/a> in October to former Dutch Prime Minister <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong>. The 75th summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was supposed to be the defining moment in making the alliance &#8220;future-proof,&#8221; and, as far as could be done, it did not betray expectations. &#8220;<strong>Allies intend to provide a minimum baseline funding of \u20ac40 billion within the next year <\/strong>and to provide sustainable levels of security assistance for Ukraine to prevail,&#8221; is put in black and white: &#8220;We fully support Ukraine&#8217;s right to choose its own security arrangements and decide its own future, free from outside interference,&#8221; and, thanks to progress on its required\u00a0&#8220;democratic, economic, and security reforms&#8221; since\u00a0the 2023 Vilnius summit, &#8220;<strong>Ukraine&#8217;s future is in NATO<\/strong>.&#8221; However,\u00a0it is the operational plan that the 32 allies in coordination with Ukraine&#8217;s president, <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>, most discussed, deciding to establish the <strong>Nato Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;to coordinate the provision of military equipment and training,&#8221; but without directly involving the Atlantic Alliance in the war with Russia: &#8220;NSATU, which will operate in allied states, will support Ukraine&#8217;s self-defense in line with the UN Charter&#8221; In concrete terms, this will mean that the responsibility will shift from the United States (whose Defense Department now leads the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group) to the whole of NATO, ensuring\u00a0a future even if there is a political storm in Washington. <strong>The most significant\u00a0risk is Donald Trump&#8217;s return to the White House after the November elections<\/strong>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/14\/natos-significant-increases-in-collective-defence-in-response-to-trump-dont-undermine-deterrence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">could call into question<\/a> the U.S. involvement in the organization and its funding and\u00a0the protection of allies and relations with <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>&#8216;s Russia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Regarding the 32 allies&#8217; support for Ukraine, there are plans\u00a0<strong>for communications from governments directly to NATO &#8220;twice per\u00a0year<\/strong>, with the first report to include contributions delivered\u00a0after January 1, 2024.&#8221; NATO will also appoint a\u00a0&#8220;senior representative&#8221; to Kyiv. &#8220;This NATO summit sends a powerful message of unity and a strong signal to the world.\u00a0<strong>Our resolve to support Ukraine is stronger than ever, including through the Ukraine Compact<\/strong>, an umbrella of bilateral security agreements,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CharlesMichel\/status\/1811531151145586891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the President of the European Council, <strong>Charles Michel<\/strong>, representing the EU in Washington along with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, <strong>Josep Borrell<\/strong>. Borrell <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/11\/ukraine-borrell-reassures-nato-allies-after-orbans-headlong-rush-the-only-peace-plan-is-zelenskys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also reassured allies<\/a> on the\u00a0headlong rush of the restless Hungarian premier and rotating President of the EU Council (until December 31), <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>, who, with his &#8220;peace missions,&#8221; went in a single week to Russian autocrat Putin, the Chinese President, <strong>Xi Jinping<\/strong>, and former U.S. President Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, without any mandate from the Union and its member countries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A minimum funding of 40 billion euros will be allocated by the 32 allies by next year, and, from the end of 2024, the military command in Wiesbaden, Germany, will be operational for the joint coordination of military aid.
