{"id":380975,"date":"2024-07-26T12:28:24","date_gmt":"2024-07-26T10:28:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/07\/26\/ue-15-miliardi-asset-russi-ucraina\/"},"modified":"2024-08-06T16:31:07","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T14:31:07","slug":"eu-1-5-billion-russian-assets-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/26\/eu-1-5-billion-russian-assets-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"EU released 1.5 billion from profits of frozen Russian assets to arm Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; Green light for military support to Ukraine with money from Moscow.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_4029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Today<\/a> (July 26), the EU paid the\u00a0<strong>first 1.5 billion euros generated from the proceeds of Russian assets<\/strong> frozen on EU soil. &#8220;There is no better symbol or use for the Kremlin\u2019s money than to make Ukraine and all of Europe a safer place to live,&#8221; rejoiced European Commission President <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/08\/eu-agreement-on-profits-from-frozen-russian-assets-90-per-cent-will-go-to-military-assistance-for-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the agreement<\/a> between member countries in May, the last missing piece was for Euroclear, a Belgian clearing company that holds most of the Russian Central Bank&#8217;s securities, to\u00a0make available a first tranche\u00a0of the proceeds. The\u00a0European Commission calculates that, depending on interest rates, it can\u00a0<strong>guarantee Kyiv about 3 billion a year<\/strong> through the profits of frozen\u00a0Russian assets: assets and reserves totaling about 210 billion euros.<\/p>\n<p>This first 1.5 billion tranche &#8212; and the next ones &#8212; will now be channeled through the <a href=\"\/\/fpi.ec.europa.eu\/what-we-do\/european-peace-facility_en%E2%80%9D\">European Peace Fund<\/a> and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eu-solidarity-ukraine.ec.europa.eu\/eu-assistance-ukraine\/ukraine-facility_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine Facility<\/a>\u00a0to support Ukraine&#8217;s military capabilities and the country&#8217;s reconstruction.\u00a0The EU 27 agreed that\u00a0<strong>90 percent of the resources would go to military assistance<\/strong> and the remaining ten to Ukraine&#8217;s reconstruction. However, they reserved the option to review the allocation as early as January 2025.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The first tranche of the windfall profits will provide concrete support on the ground,&#8221; confirmed EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell. In particular, the EU will finance &#8220;<strong>the acquisition of priority military equipment<\/strong>, namely air defense, ammunition for artillery \u2013 and also through procurement for the Ukrainian defense industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Commission calculates that Brussels will be able to guarantee about 3 billion a year to Kyiv through Russian assets immobilized in the EU.
