In office since 2013, he emerged victorious in yesterday&#8217;s (July 28) election, winning 51.4 per cent of the vote against the 44.2 of <strong>Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia<\/strong>, candidate for the opposition. It was an outcome against all odds, over which already hovers the perplexity of a large part of the international community, including the EU, with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, <strong>Josep Borrell<\/strong>, calling for ensuring &#8220;detailed vote counts and access to voting records at polling stations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Polls gave Gonzalez Urrutia, a political scientist and diplomat the Unity Platform chose to put more than two decades of chavismo behind him, ahead by 20 to 30 per cent. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado <strong>claimed irregularities in the polling and claimed victory for her candidate<\/strong> &#8220;with 70 per cent&#8221; of the vote. Several voices were raised from the European Union, whose\u00a0election observation delegation was refused entry <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/05\/29\/venezuela-withdraws-invitation-to-eu-observers-for-july-28-presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in May<\/a> by Caracas. The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, was echoed by <strong>the foreign ministers of Spain, Germany, and Italy<\/strong>. They have not succeeded now, and they will never succeed with the dignity of the people of Venezuela. Fascism in Venezuela, the land of Bolivar and Chavez, will not pass,&#8221; were his first words spoken in front of the Miraflores Palace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Given the simmering climate in Venezuela\u2014with the economy in recession, three-digit annual inflation rates, police abuses, and the increasingly undemocratic practices of Maduro&#8217;s government\u2014there was also a wish from Brussels that at least &#8220;the calm and civility&#8221; with which Election Day passed be maintained, the day on which<strong> Hugo Chavez<\/strong>, on whose legacy Maduro&#8217;s decades-long power is based, would have turned 70. &#8220;Chavez lives.
