{"id":390153,"date":"2024-09-16T17:29:01","date_gmt":"2024-09-16T15:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/09\/16\/attraversamenti-irregolari-delle-frontiere-in-calo-39-per-cento-in-meno-rilevato-da-frontex\/"},"modified":"2024-09-19T19:53:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T17:53:51","slug":"irregular-border-crossings-decrease-39-per-cent-fewer-recorded-by-frontex","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/16\/irregular-border-crossings-decrease-39-per-cent-fewer-recorded-by-frontex\/","title":{"rendered":"Irregular border crossings decrease: 39 per cent fewer recorded by Frontex"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; In the first eight months of this year, according to preliminary data collected by <strong>Frontex<\/strong>, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, the <strong>number of irregular crossings of the EU&#8217;s external borders<\/strong> fell by 39 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The percentage also shows a decrease with respect to <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/08\/14\/irregular-migrants-central-mediterranean-remains-the-most-active-route-west-african-route-sees-sharp-increase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July preliminary data<\/a>, with substantial differences in the various\u00a0routes.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>Central Mediterranean<\/strong>, which remains &#8220;the most active route to the EU,&#8221; there is a <strong>64 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0decrease in January\u2013August, standing at 41,250 landings. Frontex explains that the decline is due to <strong>preventive measures taken by the Tunisian, Libyan, and Turkish authorities<\/strong> and probably also to <strong>agreements signed by the EU and individual member states<\/strong> with the main countries of last departure.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The situation is <strong>different<\/strong> in<\/span>\u00a0the <strong>Eastern Mediterranean<\/strong>, which shows a <strong>39 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0increase. <strong>The means<\/strong> employed by criminal networks <strong>are also changing<\/strong>: &#8220;They are increasingly using speedboats to reach the Greek islands, and they\u00a0are more difficult to detect than dinghies.&#8221; Another route with a substantial <strong>decrease of 77 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0is the <strong>Western Balkans<\/strong>, where the number of landings detected is 14,669.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>substantial<\/strong> <strong>increases<\/strong> are noted on the <strong>eastern land borders<\/strong>, <strong>increased by 193 per cent,<\/strong>\u00a0reaching about 11,270 landings, and on the <strong>African route<\/strong>, with an unprecedented number of records. By the end of August, according to Frontex data, the total number of arrivals was more than 25,500, a<strong> 123 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0increase over the same period last year. On the <strong>English Channel\u00a0route,<\/strong> where a <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/04\/channel-shipwreck-six-children-and-a-pregnant-woman-among-the-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shipwreck occurred in early September<\/a>, the number of records\u00a0in the first eight months of 2024 increased by 13 per cent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Decrease also compared to July data.
