In the EU capital, calls and meetings between the leaders of the centrist parties that technically support the <strong>Europeanist coalition<\/strong>\u2014the so-called &#8220;platform&#8221; composed of <strong>Populars (EPP), Socialists (S&amp;D) and Liberals (Renew)<\/strong>\u2014are frantically taking place to try to recompose the rift, which appears to be getting deeper and deeper between Christian Democrats and progressives. A rift focused\u00a0on two profiles: those of <strong>Raffaele Fitto<\/strong> and <strong>Teresa Ribera<\/strong>. But for the moment, there is no light at the end of the tunnel.<\/p>\n<h3 id='a-vanished-agreement'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">A vanished agreement<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The meeting convened today (Nov. 13) at the Berlaymont, the seat of the EU executive, by <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> to try to save her majority\u2014which has been in the grip of a <strong>political crisis of rare intensity<\/strong> since yesterday\u2014ended with a <strong>stalemate<\/strong>. In front of\u00a0the Commission chairwoman went <strong>Manfred Weber<\/strong> (EPP), <strong>Iratxe Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez<\/strong> (S&amp;D) and <strong>Val\u00e9rie Hayer<\/strong> (Renew), but according to parliamentary sources, &#8220;<strong>there was no agreement<\/strong>&#8221; and therefore the paralysis over the knot of vice-presidencies remains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">According to the Socialist group, &#8220;all communication channels remain open.&#8221; Still, the situation remains tense, and\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Garc\u00eda P\u00e9rez herself has not declared herself &#8220;optimistic&#8221;<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0about the outcome of the negotiations.<\/span>\u00a0After all, the <strong>package logic<\/strong>\u2014whereby all six vice presidents should\u00a0be approved together\u2014makes negotiations complex. Timing at this stage is crucial and does not play in the Socialists&#8217; favour. Next November 20, <strong>Ribera will be heard by the Madrid Parliament<\/strong>, before which she will have to defend herself against the Conservatives&#8217; accusations. If the situation in Brussels does not unravel before then, it may become more difficult for the Social Democrats to defend their candidate, which would, in turn, have <strong>consequences<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>on the inauguration of the EU executive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">It is some time since the Socialists<\/span><a style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family);\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/10\/eu-commission-fitto-socialists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0launched their ban\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">on Fitto, arguing that\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">granting an apex post to a Conservative<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0member would entail an unacceptable\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">redefinition of the parliamentary majority<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0that supports von der Leyen (ECR MEPs did not vote for the latter&#8217;s re-election last July).<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The S&amp;D group&#8217;s line is clear:\u00a0<strong>first, secure the five popular, liberal and socialist vice-presidents<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>Henna Virkkunen<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>St\u00e9phane S\u00e9journ\u00e9<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Roxana M\u00eenzatu,<\/strong>\u00a0and precisely\u00a0<strong>Ribera<\/strong>), then talk about the Melonian candidate.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">In the spiral of the quarrel\u2014all within the majority\u2014also ended the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family);\" href=\"https:\/\/staging.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/07\/hearings-orbans-eu-commissioner-designate-fails-to-convince-meps-in-the-balance-oliver-varhelyi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hungarian-appointed commissioner<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit; of negotiations and &#8220;<strong>avoid a political collapse<\/strong>&#8221; by putting an end to their &#8220;irresponsible behaviour&#8221; by which they have <strong>&#8220;taken hostage&#8221; the entire process<\/strong> of approving the Commission, of which the parliamentary hearings are a key step. However, the <strong>wall between the EPP and S&amp;D continues<\/strong>, with the latter having raised the barricades against what they see as an insult by the former. In the Christian Democratic house, however, Fitto&#8217;s <strong>vice presidency\u00a0appears secure<\/strong>. At least according to\u00a0Forza Italia&#8217;s head of delegation, <strong>Fulvio Martusciello<\/strong>, who, citing a conversation he had with Weber, assured that the <strong>minister of European Affairs &#8220;is under the umbrella of the Populars&#8221;<\/strong> and of Forza Italia&#8217;s <strong>Antonio Tajani<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The novelty, at this point in the story, is the <strong>personal entry of President von der Leyen<\/strong>, who had remained behind the scenes in managing the institutional transition between the outgoing College and the new EU executive. Since yesterday, she has been\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>leading<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0as a true bridge-builder to ensure that her majority does not shatter into a thousand pieces. According to FdI&#8217;s leader in Strasbourg,\u00a0<strong>Carlo Fidanza<\/strong>, who traces the Italian premier&#8217;s recent remarks, &#8220;the <strong>PD&#8217;s position on Fitto&#8217;s vice-presidency is shameful<\/strong> and should arouse anyone&#8217;s outrage.&#8221; &#8220;Those who row against the Italian vice-presidency row against Italy and, in order to hit Giorgia Meloni, are willing to downgrade the weight of our nation,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The knot that is keeping the six vice-presidencies of the second von der Leyen-led EU executive, in which the fates of Melonian Fitto and Socialist Ribera are tied together, is not unravelling.
